Involvement of community health workers in antimicrobial stewardship interventions and programmes: a scoping review

December 20, 2025 By

Authors: Enrique Castro-Sánchez, Aina Huguet-Torres, Aina María Yáñez-Juan, Miquel Bennasar-Veny

This review looked at how community health workers help promote responsible antibiotic use in several countries across Africa and Asia. The studies showed that CHWs support infection prevention, help identify common illnesses, give health education, and in some cases prescribe antibiotics correctly when allowed. Their work led to better awareness of antibiotic resistance and less misuse, though results depended on the resources and support available in each setting. The review concludes that with stronger training and clearer roles, CHWs could make an even bigger impact in slowing antibiotic resistance.
