In India, female community health workers (CHWs), also called Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs), provide essential services to their communities. However, their experience of violence as they carry out their work is not well researched. The authors of this paper conducted a mixed-methods study to understand the violence ASHAs experience. They found that violence against ASHAs is very common. They recommend the implementation of anti-violence interventions, enhanced organizational regulations, and improving community respect for ASHA’s work to reduce violence against ASHAs.
