Interprofessional Collaboration Between Community Health Workers and Pharmacists

by

Authors: Carole Bandiera, Megan Darwood, Sabuj Kanti Mistry, Elizabeth Harris, Mark F. Harris, Parisa Aslani

Community health workers (CHWs) and pharmacists can work together to help patients, but their collaboration isn’t well understood. This study interviewed 29 CHWs and pharmacists in Australia and New Zealand. CHWs helped connect patients with pharmacists, supported medication use, and reinforced pharmacist advice. Challenges included unclear roles, poor communication, and lack of guidelines. Strategies to improve collaboration include clarifying roles, building relationships, and increasing understanding of each other’s contributions. Future work should focus on creating clear guidelines and joint interventions to strengthen CHW-pharmacist teamwork.
