Internal Facilitation by Health Assistants for the “WHO Lay Health Worker Dementia Care” in Rural Uganda: A Formative Evaluation

March 8, 2025 By

Authors: Edith K Wakida, Celestino Obua, Godfrey Zari Rukundo, Mary Samantha, Samuel Maling, Christine K Karungi, Zohray M Talib, Jessica Haberer, Stephen J Bartels

This study explored how lay health workers, supported by health assistants, can improve dementia care in rural Uganda using the World Health Organization dementia toolkit. Interviews with healthcare workers showed strong support for this approach, citing existing community structures as an advantage. However, challenges like limited dementia knowledge and resources were noted. Participants recommended training, mentorship, and better reporting tools to strengthen implementation. Supporting health assistants in guiding lay health workers could help expand dementia care in rural areas.
