Integrating trauma- and violence-informed care for adolescent mothers in Rwanda: a qualitative study with community health workers

by

Authors: Aimable Nkurunziza, Victoria L Smye, C Nadine Wathen, Kimberley T Jackson, David F Cechetto, Panagiota Tryphonopoulos, Darius Gishoma

In Rwanda, maternal community health workers provide crucial support to adolescent mothers, who face unique challenges like trauma, violence, and stigma. These workers offer personalized care, act as liaisons, and tailor home visits to meet the needs of young mothers. However, they face challenges such as handling violence disclosures, financial constraints, and transportation issues, which can lead to vicarious trauma. To improve their effectiveness, there is a need for more resources, mentorship, and training in trauma- and violence-informed care.
