Community health workers (CHWs) are becoming vital members of the healthcare team. In Ohio, their numbers grew from 850 to over 1,200 between 2018 and 2022, with many working in community organizations, health departments, hospitals, and clinics. This growth is linked to various training programs, including certification options through the Ohio Board of Nursing. CHWs help connect people to social services, preventive care, health education, chronic disease management, and community resources. They also focus on improving quality of life and health outcomes by addressing social factors affecting health, especially in diverse and underserved communities. Their local knowledge and trust within the community enhance their effectiveness. This tool highlights the growing role of community health workers (CHWs) and recommendations for their successful integration into health care systems.
