Insights and inspirations: A qualitative exploration of community health workers’ motivations in Myanmar and Bangladesh

by

Authors: Nyo Yamonn, Catherine Lee, Tom W J Y Traill

Community Health Workers (CHWs) in Myanmar and Rohingya camps in Bangladesh face unique challenges, especially in conflict-affected areas. This study, based on interviews with 34 CHWs and 8 organizational leaders, highlights their reasons for joining—gaining healthcare skills in Myanmar and job skills in Bangladesh. While pay is low, it’s important for retention, as is community appreciation. Mental health support for CHWs is a growing need. Funding gaps and inconsistent support also hurt program effectiveness and worker retention. Long-term support and planning are essential to ensure sustainable CHW programs in these regions.
