The purpose of this study was to gain an understanding of the specific needs of rural communities from the perspectives of individuals with diabetes and depression and health care workers, including CHWs. In rural Kenya identifying people with diabetes or mental health problems is challenging due to the stigma and negative experiences within community settings. Four broad themes were identified; (1) treatment and medications, (2) the role of informal and formal care, (3) community beliefs and alternative treatment pathways, (4) misconceptions and stigma: the use of language. The study demonstrated the negative effect of the use of stigmatizing language and misconceptions surrounding diabetes and depression at the individual and community levels.
