Incentive preferences for community health volunteers in Kenya: findings from a discrete choice experiment

by

Authors: Timothy Abuya, Daniel Mwanga, Melvin Obadha, Charity Ndwiga, George Odwe, Daniel Kavoo, John Wanyugu, Charlotte Warren, Smisha Agarwal

There are many community health volunteer incentivization methods, financial and non-financial; however, there is little research to understand what combination of financial and non-financial incentives optimize CHV performance. The authors of this study examine which incentives CHVs preferred and found that they preferred incentives that provided a high monthly stipend, tools of the trade, and recognition at the community level. This article highlights that both financial and non-financial incentives are key to supporting CHVs and should be considered in developing CHV programs and policy development.
