This study seeks to identify barriers that prevent women from minority and underserved populations in California from accessing genetic services after being diagnosed with breast cancer. Although genetic testing can improve survival rates and help identify hereditary cancer risks, only 26% of these women undergo testing. To tackle this issue, the researchers are developing a program that involves Community Health Workers (CHWs) who have received extensive training. These CHWs are creating local breast cancer support groups and organizing health fairs in their communities. By addressing barriers to genetic services, this initiative aims to improve access and reduce disparities for underserved women with breast cancer.
