This study aimed to create a cancer registry based in Primary Health Centres (PHCs) in Puducherry to get a more accurate picture of cancer cases in the community, as hospital-based registries can miss many cases. From March 2021 to November 2022, researchers implemented this registry across 31 PHCs and Community Health Centres (CHCs), sharing data from an existing hospital registry and conducting training sessions for Community Health Workers (CHWs). Over one year, 1,270 cancer cases were registered, but only 53% of expected cases were captured. Challenges included the COVID-19 pandemic, stigma, lack of staff, infrastructure problems, and privacy concerns. While setting up the registry was successful, the overall registration of cases was low. Strengthening population-based cancer screening is necessary for the registry to accurately reflect community cancer rates.
