The purpose of this study was to outline an intervention package that included CHW-assisted pregnancy and birth surveillance, postnatal visits to access newborns, referral for facility-based care, and establishment of a newborn stabilization unit. A quasi-experimental controlled study was conducted in Bangladesh to measure the effectiveness of this intervention. Primary outcomes of interest were all-cause neonatal mortality rate and case fatality of severe illness. Secondary outcomes were the proportion of neonates with signs and symptoms of severe illness who sought care in a hospital or from a medically qualified provider. Results demonstrated a significant reduction in the risk of neonatal mortality and case fatality among newborns in rural Bangladesh. In addition, there was a significant increase in care-seeking for severe illness at the first-level referral facility. These findings emphasize the potential effectiveness of CHW-assisted interventions, in reducing neonatal mortality and case fatality from severe illness in rural Bangladesh.
