The goal of this study was to examine the impact of incentivizing Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs) on the outcome of persons with severe mental illnesses (SMI) amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. The following abilities of ASHAs were evaluated: ensuring follow-up consultations, addressing concerns regarding illness/medication side effects, and monitoring medication adherence after incentivization. Adults with SMI were accessed for disability, work performance, internalized stigma, and illness severity. The results of this study suggest that incentivizing ASHAs can help ensure continuity of care to persons with SMI, despite pandemic barriers, and highlight the feasibility of involving ASHAs in the treatment of persons with SMI.
