Impact of community health workers on diabetes management in an urban United States Community with high diabetes burden through the COVID pandemic

March 7, 2024 By

Authors: Elinor Hansotte, Sarah B Andrea, Tess D Weathers, Cynthia Stone, Alisha Jessup, Lisa K Staten

This study investigated the impact of a Community Health Worker (CHW) program on diabetes management during the COVID-19 pandemic, in  Indianapolis Neighborhoods. Results showed that patients with CHWs had better glucose control and fewer diabetes-related complications compared to those without CHWs, both before and during the pandemic. The CHW program helped patients maintain their health outcomes even when access to routine healthcare was limited due to the pandemic. Overall, CHWs play a crucial role in supporting diabetes management, even during times of healthcare access challenges.
