Identifying Priorities for Enhancing Village Health Volunteer’s Mental Health Recovery Practices in Thai Rural Communities: A Nominal Group Technique Study

by

Authors: Chonmanan Khanthavudh, Annmarie Grealish, Vasiliki Tzouvara, Mary Leamy

This study explored how village health volunteers (VHVs) in rural Thailand can better support people with mental health challenges. Using group discussions with VHVs, healthcare workers, and community members, the study identified key priorities: expanding VHVs’ roles to include family and emotional support, helping with community reintegration, reducing stigma, and improving training in communication and counselling. Stigma reduction and awareness were seen as essential first steps. The study recommends developing tailored training and stigma-reduction programs to help VHVs provide better community-based mental health care.
