A pilot study tested the use of a low-cost smartphone ECG device, D-Heart, combined with blood pressure monitoring for cardiovascular (CV) screening in rural Kenya, Senegal, and Uganda. Community health workers screened 950 patients, identifying CV issues such as hypertension and abnormal ECGs. Results showed 18% of patients needed hospital referrals, with common diagnoses including hypertensive and rheumatic heart diseases. The screening, costing €1.10 per patient, proved to be feasible and affordable, suggesting potential for expanding low-cost CV screening in low-income areas.
