Medical-legal partnerships (MLPs) play a crucial role in addressing legal issues that negatively impact health, particularly for individuals affected by mass incarceration. These partnerships involve community health workers (CHWs) who actively support individuals with both criminal and civil legal needs after their release from incarceration. CHWs serve as vital connectors between patients and legal services, helping to identify and address legal barriers that can affect health outcomes. Additionally, CHWs work closely with legal partners to advocate for policy changes at the local and state levels. Through these efforts, MLPs not only protect the rights of individuals reentering communities but also help reduce their risk of encountering further legal problems.
