Authors: Exemplars in Global Health
Over the last five years, Liberia has created a professional community health worker program, using international guidelines. The program uses 5% of the nation’s health budget and provides a wide breadth and depth of services throughout the country. The authors identified seven key factors that facilitated the program’s success: political will; detailed financial planning; donor management; data, measurement, and evaluation; governance structures; partnership leveraging; identification of target populations; and pilot implementation before scaling. By modeling these steps, other low resource countries can use Liberia’s program as a framework to create similar CHW infrastructure.
