In this qualitative study, researchers assessed Health Scouts, a CHW-led HIV intervention in which CHWs provide one-on-one counseling in HIV prevention and treatment. Health Scouts were elected and recruited from Kasensero, Uganda, and underwent training in smartphone use, confidentiality, disclosure, and HIV-related knowledge. Researchers conducted 51 semi-structured, in-depth interviews with Health Scout clients between September and November 2018. Overall, clients reported having increased motivation to use condoms and take PrEP. Additionally, HIV-positive clients reported that Health Scout counseling helped them maintain proper ART adherence. This study demonstrates that CHWs can contribute valuably to the promotion of safe practices to decrease HIV incidence and increase HIV treatment adherence.
