Hiring Practices that Support State Integration of Community Health Workers

by

Authors: ASTHO

Community Health Workers (CHWs) are trusted members of the communities they serve, acting as vital links between healthcare services and the community. They improve access, quality, and cultural competency of care, leading to better health outcomes. Recognized as health professionals under the Affordable Care Act, CHWs work under various titles and have a strong track record of effectiveness in addressing chronic diseases and public health needs. Rooted in social justice and advocacy, CHWs are integral to state and territorial health agencies (S/THAs) and their community partners. To fully integrate CHWs into their programs, S/THAs must collaborate with CHWs to define their roles and competencies. This document explores strategies for recruiting CHWs, including assessing current engagement, developing hiring practices, and addressing barriers and enablers in the hiring process.
