Hidden in plain sight: Sexual violence against community health workers in India

by

Authors: Baldeep K. Dhaliwal, Shalini Singh, Anita Shet, Akarshitha Yaji, Arti Pandey, Manohar Agnani, Svea Closser

This study highlights the safety challenges faced by female community health workers known as ASHAs in India. Many of them work in difficult conditions and are exposed to different forms of violence due to night work, financial insecurity, and unequal power relations in their communities. The paper explains that these risks are linked to their weak position within the health system and calls for stronger protection. It recommends better institutional support, enforcement of protective laws, and greater community awareness to ensure the safety, dignity, and well-being of community health workers.
