This study aimed to assess the feasibility and acceptability of a community-based, peer support diabetes prevention program (DPP) for African-American grandmother caregivers at risk for diabetes. Grandmothers were randomized to either DPP alone or DPP plus HOPE (Healthy Outcomes through Peer Educators). The intervention group received additional support from a peer educator. Recruitment and retention rates were high, with 80% of participants retained at Week 48. End-of-program focus groups indicated high acceptability. Both groups showed significant reductions in body weight. The study successfully equipped African-American grandmothers with support to improve their health and that of their grandchildren at risk for diabetes.
