The Health Systems Assessment and Improvement Matrix (S-AIM) tool was created to recognize the essential factors within health systems necessary for implementing Community Health Worker (CHW) programs effectively. Employing a mixed methods approach, the authors sought to provide guidance to health stakeholders involved in designing, planning, assessing, and improving community health programs. The tool identifies seven programmatic health systems components categorized into four levels, ranging from ‘(1) not-enabling’ to ‘(4) highly enabling,’ indicating the degree to which the components support a functional CHW Program. During the analysis, participants, (guided by a facilitator familiar with S-AIM), collectively agree on scores for each component, through in-depth analysis and discussion and develop an action plan for improvement.
