This paper aimed to assess the existing socioeconomic status of the population in two selected blocks of Mayurbhanj & Jagatsinghpur district in Odisha, India, alongside the adequacy and utilization of health services provided by the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) in these regions. This mixed-methods study was conducted from April 2018 to March 2019, and included in-depth interviews and focus group discussions with respondents in the sample blocks. Results from this study demonstrated that the majority of ASHAs serve populations larger than the required minimum of 1,000 people, while only being paid a relatively small sum total. Antenatal womens’ transportation was found to be a significant issue, and additional flaws were revealed in the operations of village health, nutrition, and sanitation committees. Drawing on these findings, authors provide a series of recommendations to build a more comprehensive strategy to rural healthcare, including better coordination and improvements to current service delivery models.
