Gonorrhea and Early Syphilis Treatment Practices Among Community Health Care Providers in Baltimore City, Maryland

by

Authors: Renee Padiernos, Nicole Thornton, Ravikiran Muvva, Arik V Marcell, Jacky M Jennings, Christina M Schumacher

This study assessed how well community healthcare providers (CHPs) in Baltimore treated gonorrhea and early syphilis (ES) based on CDC guidelines. Data from 2018–2019 showed that while most providers followed correct treatment protocols, many did not meet goals for treating all diagnosed cases, especially for gonorrhea. High-volume clinics were less likely to meet treatment targets. While most ES cases were treated appropriately, fewer were treated quickly. The findings highlight the need for better reporting and timely treatment to improve STI care.
