Community health workers play a key role in delivering basic health services and helping countries move toward health care for everyone. Their impact depends on how well they are trained, supported, and included in the health system. This guide was created to help design and improve training programs for community health workers. It responds to large differences between countries in how CHWs are trained and prepared for their work. The guide is mainly for people who design and teach CHW training programs, but it can also help managers, supervisors, and policymakers who work with CHWs. The guide explains the core skills all community health workers should have, plus additional skills based on the services they provide. Some training content applies to all CHWs, while other parts should only be used where they fit local needs. The guide is meant to be adapted so training matches each country’s health system, community needs, and the specific roles CHWs play.
