This study explored whether community health workers could take on a larger role in supporting mental health care within community organizations. Interviews with workers from five U.S. states showed that many were open to the idea and felt capable of doing tasks such as assessing mental health, supporting patients, and working with mental health specialists, especially if they received proper training and supervision. Their strong relationships with communities and knowledge of local resources were seen as key strengths. However, working closely with primary care providers was viewed as a possible challenge. The findings suggest that community health workers could help expand access to mental health care if their roles are carefully supported and coordinated.
