Financing Alliance for Health Country Case Study: Ethiopia

Financing Alliance for Health has produced a series of country case studies providing robust information on community health system profiles, taking a financing lens. Each case study includes insights on community health system context, structure and lessons on financing.

Ethiopia’s Health Extension Program (HEP) was introduced in 2002, and introduced a resource harmonization mechanism introduced in 2007 to continuously expand the scope of HEP. Key lessons from this program include:

  • strong, multilevel, political commitment to secure funding 
  • Ministry-led coordination to secure partnerships
  • Mobilizing local resources ensure program and financial stability
  • Secure long term sustainability by innovating financing sources
