This review looked at how community health workers (CHWs) are paid in low- and middle-income countries and how different payment methods affect their work. It found four main ways CHWs are paid: regular salaries, pay based on performance, income from small businesses, and a mix of these. While most payment methods helped improve CHWs’ motivation and performance, a common problem was late or unreliable payments. The study suggests that payment plans should match the local economic and cultural context, and that CHWs should be involved in choosing how they are paid.
