This study sought to assess the feasibility of a CHW-led home palliative care program. Researchers aimed to evaluate the ability of CHWs to assist patients, maintain records of care, and assess patient decline over the intervention. Four CHWs from Kolkata, India, were recruited and trained to use the Worldwide Hospice and Palliative Care Alliance’s Palliative Care Toolkit. Participating CHWs then provided patient care to 10 patients for three months by making home visits, implementing care plans, and making any necessary referrals. At the end of the three month period, two patients reported a reduction in pain scores while the remaining eight saw no change. Overall, this study finds that CHWs may be able to provide at-home palliative care, but more research is needed.
