Factors Influencing Performance and Engagement of Community Health Workers in Maternal and Child Health Service Delivery: A Systematic Review of Literature from Low- and Middle-Income Asian Countries

by

Authors: Hendra Goh, Yan Fang Lee, Kakrona Sao, Sungwon Yoon, Truls Ostbye, Siyan Yi

This review looked at what affects how community health workers (CHWs) in Asia deliver maternal and child health services. Across 30 studies, the key factors included personal motivation and skills, family and peer support, access to training and resources, community attitudes and safety, and broader health policies and funding. Many challenges come from gaps in knowledge, resources, and empowerment. Digital tools show promise in addressing these barriers and strengthening CHWs’ performance and long-term commitment.
