The purpose of this study was to explore the factors affecting close-to-community (CTC) health workers’ motivation in providing sexual and reproductive health services in low-income urban settlements of Bangladesh. In-depth interviews were conducted in two phases with CTC health workers operating, and results uncovered that both extrinsic and intrinsic factors affect CTC health workers’ motivation. Extrinsic factors included financial incentives, job security, and community attitude, while intrinsic factors included perceived quality of services provided, professional development opportunities, and recognition. These findings support the notion that organizations should provide adequate financial incentives, job security, and professional development opportunities, in addition to supportive and regular supervision, to maintain and improve CTC health workers’ motivation.
