Exploring the motivations of female community health volunteers in primary healthcare provision in rural Nepal: A qualitative study

August 26, 2024 By

Authors: Sarita Panday, Edwin van Teijlingen, Amy Barnes

Motivating Female Community Health Volunteers (FCHVs) in rural Nepal is key to achieving primary healthcare (PHC) in resource-poor areas. This study explored what influences their motivation. While FCHVs are committed to their voluntary work, challenges like the cost of volunteering, lack of family and community support, and bureaucratic demands reduce their motivation. Many face economic and social pressures that strain their ability to continue volunteering. To sustain their motivation and ensure effective PHC, the study suggests that financial support and better recognition are needed for these volunteers.
