Exploring the integration of Indigenous traditional birth attendants into the western healthcare system: A qualitative case study from the Amazon of Ecuador

by

Authors: Eline Hallor, Erika Arteaga, Miguel San Sebastián

Indigenous communities in Latin America often face challenges accessing Western healthcare, despite valuing traditional medicine. In Ecuador’s Amazon region, efforts have been made to integrate Indigenous traditional birth attendants (TBAs) into the Western healthcare system. This study explored this integration, highlighting that while initial skepticism existed, mutual learning helped bridge cultural gaps and improve Indigenous women’s comfort with healthcare services. However, financial and logistical barriers remain for TBAs. Continued support and development are essential to sustain this integration, with future research needed to assess health impacts and explore expanding this model to other regions.
