This study sought to understand the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on CHW well-being with a view to identify strategies that could support CHWs during COVID-19 and subsequent health system shocks within Nigeria. A creative participatory methodology of photovoice with CHWs was utilized, in which participants were asked to take and share photos documenting their experiences of working and living through the pandemic. Results uncovered similar experiences of CHWs across states within Nigeria, providing unique insights into how the Nigerian health system was impacted and how this closely aligns to the performance and well-being of CHWs. In addition, three overarching themes related to CHW experiences were identified: major stressors and challenges experienced due to COVID-19, the impact of COVID-19 on providing routine care, and motivation and support from the community. These findings emphasize the need to acknowledge mental health and prioritize the well-being of healthcare staff, including CHWs, within communities during disease outbreaks.
