Exploring health provider’s knowledge on the home-based maternal and neonatal health care package in Rwanda

by

Authors: Clemence Nishimwe & Gugu G. Mchunu

In 2010, Rwanda implemented post-natal community health worker home visits through a home–based maternal and neonatal health care package (HB-MNHC). This cross-sectional study aimed to assess health provider knowledge of HB-MNHC services. Using questionnaires, researchers collected information from 79 health providers involved in the HB-MNHC program, including nurses, midwives, and social workers. Researchers found varying knowledge levels among study participants. For example, about 74 percent of study participants were aware of the three-home visits occurring after the birth of a baby with normal birth weight, but only 65 percent of participants were aware of the required visits for a low birth weight infant. Overall, this study suggests that health care professionals, including CHWs, may need to be provided with more education on clinical guidelines for maternal and child care.
