Community health workers (CHWs), particularly village malaria workers (VMWs) in Cambodia, play a crucial role in improving healthcare in remote areas. As Cambodia aims for malaria elimination by 2025, sustaining the VMW network becomes vital. This study conducted from 2021 to 2023 explored enhancing VMWs’ roles to include diagnosing and treating non-malarial illnesses. VMWs received training and new tools for rapid diagnostic testing and expanded their roles to cover health education on various topics. Stakeholder meetings discussed integrating VMWs with other health worker networks to ensure their continued relevance until malaria elimination is achieved. VMWs were found to be motivated and capable of taking on new responsibilities, suggesting the feasibility of expanding their roles. Ongoing monitoring and evaluation are recommended as VMWs adopt new duties.
