This study explored how Malaria Community Health Workers (CHWs) in the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) are adapting to provide both malaria and non-malaria services as malaria cases decline. A survey of 28 CHW programs in 14 countries revealed that these workers often provide health education for malaria and other diseases, and are involved in COVID-19 activities. Most programs are funded by donors, with some also receiving government support. Challenges include decreasing donor funding and restrictions due to COVID-19. The study suggests that expanding CHW roles could help sustain malaria services and strengthen community health, but more research is needed to confirm the benefits and cost-effectiveness of this approach.
