The goal of this study was to assess the gender responsiveness of the Revised National Community Health Services Policy (RNCHSP) and its programme implementation in five counties across Liberia to identify opportunities to improve gender equity in the programme. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with policymakers, community health assistants (CHAs), other members of the community health workforce, alongside community members. Results suggested that despite the Government of Liberia’s intention to prioritize women in the recruitment and selection of CHAs, the planning and implementation of the RNCHSP has not been gender responsive. Hence, the authors assert that strengthening gender responsiveness within RNCHSP programmes by addressing barriers to womens’ recruitment into the CHA workforce, among other measures, is key to enhancing gender equity in Liberia’s health system.
