Examining global Indigenous community wellness worker models: a rapid review

May 27, 2024 By

Authors: Kayla M Fitzpatrick, Erynne Sjoblom, Giulia Puinean, Heath Robson, Sandra M Campbell, Bryan Fayant, Stephanie Montesanti

This study reviews community wellness worker models in Indigenous populations to address healthcare inequities and rising chronic disease burdens. It examines 28 articles on these models, focusing on worker roles, training, decolonized approaches, and structural supports. Findings highlight that wellness workers serve as crucial links between Indigenous communities and mainstream health services, using their cultural knowledge and community ties to improve mental wellness. Despite their promise, challenges include power imbalances, unclear roles, lack of recognition, and the mental health needs of both workers and communities.
