This study maps the evidence and scope of physical rehabilitation services delivered by community health workers (CHWs) in sub-Saharan Africa. Out of 6996 articles identified in a scoping review, 20 were selected for analysis. The studies came from countries including Eritrea, Ethiopia, Malawi, Mauritius, Namibia, South Africa, and Uganda. CHWs were involved in assessments, case management, health education, community support, health systems linkage, and administration. They delivered services through home-based, community-based, facility-based, or a combination of these modes. Barriers included limited resources, societal attitudes, governance issues, geographical challenges, and delivery capacity, while proximity to the community, positive job attitudes, and collaborative support facilitated service delivery. The study concludes that training and integrating CHWs into national healthcare systems, with careful selection of CHWs, would help overcome these barriers.
