Evaluating the implementation and sustainment potential of a pharmacy-embedded community health worker model

by

Authors: Megan G Smith, Meghan Breckling, Adrian Williams, Heidi Charton, Geoffrey Curran, Benjamin Teeter

This study looked at how well a program worked that placed community health workers inside rural pharmacies in Arkansas. Most CHWs and pharmacy supervisors said the model fit well, was practical, and made sense in their setting. CHWs were satisfied with their roles, and supervisors saw clear benefits for patients. Helpful factors included strong community need, supportive leadership, and CHWs already knowing the community. The main challenges were heavy training requirements and difficulty finding applicants in rural areas. Overall, the model shows real promise, but more research is needed to understand long-term impact and cost.
