This study examined whether community health workers could help identify common surgical conditions in remote pastoralist communities in northern Kenya where access to care is limited. Trained community health workers screened nearly 2,850 adults for conditions such as hernias and tumors, and suspected cases were later checked by surgeons. The results showed that the community health workers were highly accurate in identifying possible cases, and the approach was well accepted by the community. It also reduced the distance people needed to travel for an initial assessment by more than 80 kilometres. The study suggests that training community health workers to screen for surgical conditions can help detect problems earlier and improve access to care in remote areas.
