Enhancing medication adherence in marginalized and minoritized communities: A brief training approach for pharmacy technicians and community health workers

by

Authors: Richard Segal, Michelle L Zeigler, Jordan L Wallace, Folakemi T Odedina

This study evaluated a training program designed to improve medication adherence by pharmacy technicians and community health workers (CHWs). The program included online video lectures and an in-person session, focusing on skills to enhance adherence. After the training, both pharmacy technicians and CHWs showed significant improvements in their knowledge and confidence in helping patients with medication adherence. The results were similar for both groups, with pharmacy technicians also gaining a better understanding of cultural competence and health disparities. The study suggests that training these healthcare workers can be an effective strategy to improve medication adherence, especially in marginalized communities. Future research is needed to see how this training affects patient outcomes.
