Empowering Agricultural Workers Through Community Health Worker-Led Pesticide Safety Workshops in Washington State

by

Authors: Ileana María Ponce-González, Griselda Arias, Elmer Diaz, Michael L Parchman

A community health worker-led workshop in Washington state aimed to educate migrant and refugee agricultural workers about pesticide exposure prevention. The program, which included a Spanish-language mobile app, reached 263 participants across 49 communities. Before the workshop, most participants had no prior pesticide training. After the workshop, there were significant improvements in their knowledge about pesticide-related illnesses, identifying pesticide labels, and safely washing produce. The study shows that community health workers can effectively fill gaps in pesticide safety education for these vulnerable communities. Further efforts are needed to better integrate the mobile app into the training.
