This study in Nepal tested whether community health workers could improve cervical cancer screening among women living in slum areas. Women who received direct education from community health workers learned more about cervical cancer and were more likely to go for screening compared to those who only saw posters. Screening rates increased significantly in the group supported by community health workers. The findings show that personal, community-based education is more effective than general awareness messages in encouraging women to get screened.
