In this longitudinal study, researchers assessed the effectiveness of four CHW interventions and their impact on CHW knowledge, job satisfaction, and household coverage. The four interventions were refresher training, provision of a bicycle, supportive supervision, and financial incentives. Researchers recruited nearly 1,300 CHWs from four districts in Kenya. After a year-long study period, authors found that CHWs’ health knowledge was increased by three single and combination interventions, including the refresher training course. In contrast, rates of job satisfaction were only increased by financial incentives, and no single intervention was able to increase household coverage. Overall, there was no single intervention that was found to improve all aspects of CHW performance, suggesting that a combination of interventions are needed to improve CHW knowledge, job satisfaction, and household coverage.
