As malaria rates decline in the Greater Mekong Subregion, community health workers (CHWs) are seeing reduced motivation and fewer malaria tests. To address this, an expanded CHW role was created with input from communities and health experts and tested in 72 villages in Myanmar. The expanded role led to a 23% increase in weekly malaria tests and a 3.3 times increase in referrals for other illnesses like dengue and tuberculosis. Though more costly, this model helps maintain testing levels needed for malaria elimination and improves referrals for broader health issues.
