Effect of a Community Health Worker–Led Intervention Among Low-Income and Minoritized Patients With Cancer: A Randomized Clinical Trial

by

Authors: Manali I Patel, Kris Kapphahn, Emily Wood, Tumaini Coker, Deborah Salava, Angela Riley, Ivana Krajcinovic

This randomized clinical trial investigated the effectiveness of a community health worker (CHW)–led intervention in improving health-related quality of life (HRQoL) among low-income and racial and ethnic minority individuals newly diagnosed with cancer. The intervention, which included advance care planning, symptom screening, and assistance with health-related social needs, showed significant improvements in HRQoL compared to usual care alone. The findings suggest that such interventions have the potential to address disparities in cancer care outcomes for marginalized populations.
