In this editorial, authors provide a synthesis of evidence from 14 articles, with a particular focus on CHW recruitment, training, and integration strategies. Authors highlight the lack of literature on CHW recruitment but emphasize the importance of proper CHW recruitment, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. In regards to training, authors report on how CHW training varies greatly in scope and standards given a wide array of CHW training program models. Finally, authors discuss methods for integrating CHWs into community outreach settings and multidisciplinary clinical teams, concluding that gaps in CHW integration persist. The authors assert that, overall, more attention should be directed towards optimizing CHW recruitment, training, and integration models.
